Hadley v. Baxendale – Hadley contracted with Baxendale to transport a broken mill shaft for repairs. The shaft was delivered late causing the mill to remain inoperable. The court held that the plaintiff could only recover damages that both parties could have reasonably expected to arise from breach of the contract.

Carlill v. Carbolic Smoke Ball Co. – The company offered a reward to anyone who contracted a disease after using the smoke ball as directed. The court held that the advertisement was an offer and that users could claim the reward without first notifying the company of acceptance.

Drennan v. Star Paving Co. – Star Paving submitted a subcontract bid to Drennan for a construction project. After Drennan used the bid in calculating its own bid for the general contract Star Paving realized it had made an error and attempted to withdraw. The court held that Drennan had relied to its detriment on Star Paving’s bid and that promissory estoppel applied in rending the contract enforceable.
